I don’t watch reality TV and I am not a follower of any kind of it. Yet, I stumbled upon a real estate related “reality show” recently and watched for only a few minutes. I soon determined there was little reality associated with it.
I was surprised at the vocabulary of the “prospective home buyers”. Their vocabulary captured my attention, and I heard the same words repeated over again: “I love the (amenity or feature)” or “I hate (the amenity or feature)”. The “prospective home buyers” said they loved the flooring but hated the staircase. They loved the natural light from the skylights but hated the view from the front windows. They loved the kitchen but hated the kitchen cabinets. It was one extreme or the other.
The vocabulary of prospective home buyers real estate related television “reality” shows does not reflect what happens in the “real world” of real estate. More often than not, the vocabulary of buyer clients I have worked with over the decades contains words such as “dislike” or “not pleased” to “WOW! This is fantastic!”. After all, people are viewing homes from the point of view of creating a life, a place to call “home”, often a place to raise a family; a safe haven; an enjoyable neighborhood where friendships and meaningful relationships are developed. Most people are considering possibilities whether in the short term or long term.
While the list of “wants” certainly has its place, the specific items on the “wants” list can be added to a house over time. What is most important is who is in the house waiting for you to come home and the average life activities which occur inside the house on a day-to-day which makes a house a “home”.
