About the City of Schenectady, in New York's Capital Region​​​​​​​


The City of Schenectady is one of the three principal cities which make up "The Capital Region" of New York State.  It is located near the confluence of the Hudson and Mohawk Rivers.  


General Electric had its headquarters in Schenectady and, the city was also the headquaters of ALCO, a major manufacturer of locomotives.  The city was once known as "The City that lights and hauls the world".  


Today, Schenectady has a population of over 66,000 people.  The downtown area went through a major renovation of street scapes and the rehabilitation of many buildings since 2010.  


The Stockade Historic District features dozens of Dutch and English Colonial houses dating from the 18th and 19th centuries.  In fact, the Stockade Historic District is the first such in New York State.  


Schenectady is rich in architectural housing designs found in such places as the General Electric Realty Plot.


Schenectady has many parks for recreation.  The crown jewel of which, is Central Park featuring a manicured rose garden and the man-made Iroquois Lake.  Schenectady's Central Park takes its name after New York City's Central Park.
